Art Lab strives to diversify the educational experiences of kindergarten through eighth grade students by exposing them to all manner of creative specialists who will share expertise through workshops and experiential activities. Art and play lab provides a child centered environment for students who love to engage their imagination and creativity in a free, generative and joyful manner.

Based on the philosophy of inquiry based and self-directed learning, children will have opportunities to work with exceptional teachers and mentors, who will support and nurture their natural curiosity and interests. Children will have free access to such lab stations as art, cooking, theater, woodworking, ceramics and gardening, which encourage exploratory, experiential learning, innovation and creativity. In this free choice environment, children can roam from playing in the spacious Willowbrook playground, without the pressure of strict timelines, to creative “lab” stations, throughout the day.

There is growing evidence that self-directed learning and free play permit children to realize their optimum abilities to learn, grow and develop naturally and positively. (Research from Psychologist Peter Gray). Their play will be supervised but not structured by an adult. Play supervisors and facilitators will bring fun objects for the students to use in their play, such as large cardboard boxes, sheets, and small pieces of furniture. This is a lab environment, not a classroom- therefore, tinkering, creativity, observing, experimenting are encouraged, without the expectation of an end product.
