William Broen
William Broen is a Southern California based bio regional herbalist  with a background in constitutional herbalism (including 4 years studying at the Pacific School of Herbal Medicine in Oakland, Ca) and California Ethnobotany.  William is currently the Southwest Regional Educator for Herb Pharm. He has also been leading herb walks and giving lectures on local medicinal plants for over 15 years, both on his own and through many institutions including the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and the UC Riverside Botanic Garden.
 Howie Brounstein
 Howie Brounstein has taught botany, herbalism, and wildcrafting extensively for decades, including at such herbal establishments as the Michael Moore’s Southwest School of Botanical Medicine. He is the co-owner and a primary instructor of the Columbines School of Botanical Studies and has a busy clinical practice in Eugene, Oregon. He is well known for his brilliant in depth teaching style and his passionate love of plants.


Marcia Coppess:

Marcia is a practicing herbalist and former medical writer with a particular interest in working with clients facing chronic conditions. After studying independently for a number of years, she graduated from KP Khalsa’s two-year Professional Herbalist Certificate Program and is now completing work toward certification in Functional Herbalism at the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. She lives in Pasadena with her husband, son, and daughter.







Earthroots Field School leads classes year round on organic gardening, survival skills, herbal medicine making, cooking with whole foods, permaculture, bird language, animal tracking, natural building and natural crafts. All programs are outdoors and hands-on, to cultivate a sense of care and connection between people and the natural world. Earthroots programs take place in Orange County, California for kids of all ages, teens and adults.  Earthroots instructors use the art of questioning to inspire curiosity and bring awareness to how all of life is connected. Our 39 acre property, Big Oak Canyon, is becoming a regional demonstration center for habitat restoration, permaculture design and environmental education.

Shana Lipner Grover  
Shana Lipner Grover is a Clinical Herbalist and Health Educator, who has been working with plant medicine and nutrition for over 15 years. She is the director of Sage Country Herbs School of Botanical Studies and has written and teaches 350 hours of classes in San Diego and Orange counties on herbal medicine and nutrition with Healing Hands School of Holistic Health. She has taught throughout the western US at herb festivals and conferences, like Traditions in Western Herbal Medicine, and has been a guest lecturer for higher learning establishments including Bastyr University and CSULA.. Shana also has a high quality herbal line of products available at her Etsy store, Sage Country Herbs and she loves going for hikes and studying ecology as well as offering plant walks; teaching about edible and medicinal plants. She has a clinical practice in North County San Diego with a focus on empowering people and their health through nutrition, lifestyle, and herbal medicine.

Julie James  
Julie James is an herbalist, and director of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, providing herbal education opportunities for people all over Southern California. After almost 3 decades of formal study, apprenticeship, consulting and teaching, she now focuses on expanding understanding of traditional Western herbalism, deep plant love, medicine-making, wellness and holistic nutrition. She has taught for numerous organizations and events,and has created a large body of herbal education curricula for adults and children. Teaching about plant medicines is her passion and her joy.

Kristy Martinez:

Kristy Martinez is an herbalist, massage therapist, lifelong educator, writer, medicine maker, and cultivator of community. She is the owner and educator for Desert Rain Apotheca, an apothecary that focuses on holistic self-care. Kristy is a proud New Mexico native transplanted to Southern California, and she’s just as enamored with the coast as she is the desert that holds her heart. After several adventures in different careers and fields including a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, she finally found holistic health as the area that suits her the most. As a lover of gardening and being highly herb-curious, she met and began learning from herbalist, Shana Lipner Grover, who continues to inspire, mentor, and encourage Kristy as an herbalist and teacher. Kristy graduated from Healing Hands school of Holistic Health in Escondido, CA as a Holistic Health Practitioner, and is currently completing her 2nd year apprenticeship with Julie James at the Green Wisdom School of Herbal Studies in Long Beach, CA. Kristy has a fascination and passion for herbs and bodywork and their healing effects on the human body. She confides that it was the traumatic loss of her parents to suicide that prompted her exploration of holistic self-care. Helping others recognize the inter-connectedness of their body, mind and Spirit and empowering them to take control of their own well-being is at the center of everything she does. She maintains passion and excitement in her teaching, and is always eager for the opportunity to educate others so that they may improve their own lives and the lives of others.

Lily Mazzarella MS, CNS

Lily is a Clinical Herbalist, board-certified Nutrition Specialist and creator of the Seasonal Cleanse. She is the owner and lead practitioner at Farmacopia, a unique integrative clinic and herbal apothecary in Santa Rosa, California, where she has guided hundreds of clients in their journey to wellness. Accompanied by over 10 years of clinical experience, Lily’s practice is informed by scientific study, traditional constitutional systems, attention to the latest research, and an intimate knowledge of the “character” of hundreds of herbs, foods and nutrients.

She began her herbal education at Northeast School of Botanical Medicine in Ithaca, and went on to receive her Masters of Science in Herbal Medicine from the Maryland University of Integrative Health. Over the course of her career she has served as a consultant for various organizations, including the Ceres Project, Sonoma County Indian Health Services, Premier Nutrition Labs and has been sharing her knowledge and passion for herbal medicine as a core faculty member at the California School of Herbal Studies since 2006.

Benjamin Pixie

Benjamin  Pixie has been actively romancing the wilds of this world for over half of his life.  He is husband to millions of virgin maidens who dedicate their lives to the sex work of the Earth, and lovingly serves 50 queens.  In addition to beekeeping, he is a mead maker, a conjurer of spirits, herbalist, a hide tanner, leather worker, & warrior poet. He is father of 2 shining radiant little witches.


Jess Starwood

Jess Starwood is a clinical herbalist, wildcrafter and plant-based culinary artist. She is the owner of SunRaven Apothecary in Moorpark, California where she can be found brewing up herbal medicines, crafting unusual wild food dishes and teaching adult and children’s classes. She is also the culinary consultant and forager for the acclaimed Ojai Ranch House restaurant, offering creative vegan menu items that incorporate wild foods including fermented nut cheeses and vegan desserts. With her lifelong passion for nature and plants, Jess has studied natural health and herbal medicine for over 15 years and has a Masters of Science degree in Herbal Medicine from the American College of Healthcare Sciences in Portland, Oregon. Jess offers a wide variety of programs and workshops connecting the community with natural healing and inspiring an invaluable connection with nature and our local environment.
